Photographic Research and Inquiry NON MAJORS
The following ART 21 piece ’Nocturne (White Poppies)’ was a
response to the bombing of Afghanistan and the Opium Poppies as a source of
violence. The artist Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle stated “I was interested in
investigating the fact that the flower was not a natural creation. It was a
cultural and an historical creation.” Opium Poppies are used in the creation of
Heroin (and other narcotics). The media
is also being tackled as the news of war has become an object of consumerism.
The Poppies are seen through night vision goggles (a tool in war) in an attempt
to use art as a medium for awareness. Throughout the third world, suffering
workers in poor economies are turning to the drug trade to survive. Governments
are barely making a dent on a 400 billion dollar global business.

White Poppy Daydream-
Its midnight and the air is lit by gun fire
Try growing in American barbwire.
Heroin chic in burka attire.
Cumulus and mushroom clouds twist
Through the wind I hear my sisters resist
Crying as they're uprooted
Dreaming as we're looted
I'm just a flower that means good
when the rest of the world is up to no good.
